In Junior High, we watched this crazy video with a catchy tune about dumb ways to die. It went well with this teaching from Jesus about a dumb way to die. We all know the story he shared… one man built his house on rock and another built his house on sand. When the storm came, the house built on rock survived, but the house built on sand came crashing down. If the man and his family were in that house, surely that was a dumb way to die!
What was Jesus’ main point here? This story concludes his famous Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7, and his teaching regards making the lessons learned from his sermon the foundation one builds their life upon. Those who learned something and put it into practice can withstand the storms of this life. Those who hear it but do not, well, you know what happens.
We had spent the past 10 weeks or so studying Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount and some of the teachings he wants his followers to practice. Jesus’ teachings ranged from how to handle anger, romantic desires, and love for enemies… generosity, humble prayers, and judging others… as well as earthly treasures, stress and worry, and the difference between asking God vs. demanding from God. We covered a lot, but these incredible matters of the heart make the difference between a house built on rock and a house built on sand.
Enjoy this video and smile, life is fragile and precious… that’s why Jesus wants to prepare us well for it!
